This car is a replica of a 1959 Porsche 356 Convertible D, the successor to the Speedster.
The 356 Speedster was introduced in 1954 for the US market. It was initially successful, particularly on the West coast, but by 1958 sales were dwindling. Porsche introduced the Convertible D with more creature comforts including better seating, wind up windows and a deeper windscreen. The D stands for the coachwork company Drauz who built the bodies for Porsche. A total of 1331 were built before Porsche replaced it in 1959 with the 356B.
My car was built by Intermeccanica in 2001 on a purpose built chassis, rather than the shortened VW Beetle chassis favoured by most replica builders. Intermeccanica were founded in Italy in 1960 building specialist sports cars but since 1982 have been building replica Speedsters and Convertible Ds in Vancouver.
Jake Raby of Aircooled Technology built the engine which is a Type 4 (as fitted to the Porsche 914), bored and stroked to 2615cc, and fuel injected. It has been dyno'd at over 160 bhp at the rear wheels.
It is also fitted with a number of Porsche and other period
parts including an original Porsche 356 steering wheel, a period
Blaupunkt radio and Leitz luggage rack.
