Sywell Classic - Pistons & Props
23rd/24th September 2017
This event, organised by Footman James and Live Promotions, at Sywell Aerodrome near Northampton, was probably the best event of the year for me. I left home in the dark to avoid the Tunnel Toll and even after a stop on the way arrived ridiculously early at about 7:45 just as the gates were opening.
I had plenty of time to wander round and take photos of the visiting aircraft and get some breakfast. I was soon joined by John Jackson in his lovely black Convertible D and then by Ian Parris in his immaculate white Chesil. Lucie Steed and her lovely mum then joined us in the car that won best in show at Stoneleigh.
Tony Woodfield was not able to bring his Spyder but did come along in person to enjoy the show, as did Julian Robinson. The weather was a bit cool but dry and the flying displays and on track action were excellent.

This two day classic motoring festival features historic racers, hot rods and motorbikes and 50s & 60s music, together with classic aircraft displays on the ground and in the air. I particularly enjoyed the vintage drag-racers on the specially set up strip.
We were one of 80 car clubs represented, from pre-war sports cars to Stags and Cobras.

On Sunday we had warm sunshine all day, Lucie brought her car again and we were joined by Gerald and Melanie Rigby in their magnificent Street Beetle Speedster with Porsche engine, gearbox and suspension, and by Paul Newton-Smith and his son Ben in two amazing 356 Coupes, one original and one a superb replica with all mod cons including air conditioning and electric windows! Martin and Teresa Smith came in their beautifully finished Scarbee Speedster. Joe Powell brought his son Alex in their 716 RSK Spyder which rightly attracted a lot of attention and we found another black Speedster, not yet a Club Member, later in the day.
On the 2 mile long 'Racing Runway' there were iconic Formula 1 cars, Group B Rally cars, Hot Rods Go-Karts and Superbikes in action throughout the weekend - some reaching speeds of over 200mph
Up in the skies there were amazing aerial displays & acrobatics on both days
