VolksWorld Show at Sandown Park

2nd & 3rd April 2016 Report by Tony Tucker

This is always a good event to kick off the season with a great display of air-cooled vehicles; mostly Beetles, Camper Vans, etc - but with a good sprinkling of early Porsches.

Rob Jones, John Mercer and I met for breakfast at the Giro Cafe in Esher as usual - and proceeded to the show, where our Speedsters were parked up.

Although the majority of vehicles on display in the halls are expensively restored cars that are brought in on trailers and have never been driven on a road, there are always a number of enthusiasts' cars and vans parked in the outside areas, as well as lots of air-cooled vehicles for sale and a massive number of dealers from all over Europe selling every conceivable part or accessory that any petrol-head could wish for!

This was the first time I had seen John's Speedster since he re-acquired it after having to sell it as an unfinished project after his cancer problems nearly 16 years ago. The car has had several owners and done a huge mileage but John is gradually getting through all the jobs that need to be done.

While admiring the progress John has made, we were approached by a chap who said that, also with about twenty other cars, he owned a 4-seater, long wheel base Speedster, which he had brought with him to the show. Both John and I instantly thought that it must be one of the small number of rather awful Pilgrim 4-seaters produced a few years ago.

Not so! Julian Robinson's car was a unique Dax, painted bright red and looking a great deal better than the Pilgrim monsters.

This car had flared wheel arches, a sort of Outlaw appearance with no bumbers and extra long doors. This meant that it looked surprisingly good for a stretched Speedster although there is a lot of work needed on the almost bare interior, which the owner is attending to.

We were unable to persuade Julian to join the Club there and then - he said he could not afford to join all the clubs his multiple car ownership entitles him to!

The weather was good for early April - lots of sunshine - so it was hoods down all the way and a decent start to the season.
