Stonor Park - Sunday 3rd June 2012
Report from Tony Tucker, Events Co-ordinator
If there is one thing that is certain in the Speedster/Spyder club calendar, it is that Stonor Park guarantees good weather. In 15 years, I have hardly ever experienced anything other than all-day sunshine. Wrong!
Sunday’s event started with rain, continued with rain and ended with rain (anyone watching the Royal Jubilee celebrations on the Thames will understand!) I left home at 6.15am in order to meet at Pishill (rain all the way) and then, accompanied by Len Raynsford and Paul Smith, on to Trevor and Ruth Hughes’ nearby home to enjoy their very generous and much appreciated offer of breakfast.
We were joined by other club members, with whom we then proceeded to the show (still raining!) Four members attending the event were not in their usual club cars, either because of car problems (Gerald Rigby and Ant Dowdall), or the need for larger vehicles in order to cater for the presence of young children (Simon Hambly and Trevor Hughes). Our display was therefore limited to four Speedsters, but they attracted the usual attention, despite the weather (still raining!)

The show had many of its usual fine features, but was substantially down on numbers this year, probably because of the clash of dates with the Royal Diamond Jubilee, rather than the weather. There were two other 356s present in the Concours d’Elegance, a Pre-A and a 356C coupe and, of course, V-Dubs of every shape and size.
And so it was that I left the show in the early afternoon (still raining) and drove the 70 miles home in the rain, arriving in time to watch the Jubilee (in the pouring rain). Ah well, that’s England in June for you! Last week we were almost uncomfortably hot in tee shirts in all-day sunshine at TIPEC and seven days later, we were cold and very wet at Stonor!
Never mind, there are two more events in June, at Bath and Castle Combe - and we always have sunshine at the latter!
