At last – sunshine at Stoneleigh!  After a run of miserable weather for many years at this event, we were blessed with unbroken sunshine this year, albeit with a strong breeze throughout the weekend.

The Club had approximately 40 different cars on display over the weekend, several of them there for both days, so the public had a considerable range of Speedsters and Spyders of a wide variety of makes to attract them.  As well as Speedsters and Spyders, Udo’s legendary home-made 356A Coupe was, of course, in attendance, but we were also joined by a fine original 356C Coupe and a rebuilt fibreglass Karmann Ghia.

Best in Show this year went to Chris Sanders’ fine white Tygan Speedster, with the Martin and Walker Spyder of Steve Riley and the silver blue Chesil Speedster of Paul and Wendy Quemby also being commended.

There were noticeably more traders in the main halls than last year, offering every conceivable accessory and adornment that the enthusiast could wish for.  Among the manufacturers showing their cars was Peter Bailey with two Chesil Speedsters which looked, of course, quite stunning.

New Club Administrator, Rob Jones, had booked a room for the Club to hold its AGM and this idea proved a great success on account of the number of members attending the show who were able to come to the meeting, something that many of them, particularly from the north of the country, have not always been able to do in the past.

The only disappointment, as far as I could see, was the increase in the price of bacon rolls to £3.90.  Even in central London it’s only £2 and £1.50 was all I paid locally this morning.  £3.90 for a bacon roll?  What is the world coming to?

An excellent start to the season, however, and we hope that the weather will continue to treat us kindly as we move on to Stonor Park and Castle Combe early next month (full details on our events page).

Hope to see many members there!
