Porsche Picnic/Cars @ the Course

25th September 2011

Report from Tony Tucker

A splendid late summer day at Windsor Racecourse provided a great end to the main outdoor events of the season, as hundreds of Porsches,  Alfas and other classic cars arrived to take part in the annual show arranged by 911 and Porsche World magazine and its sister publications.

First on the scene in the early morning were the Spyder of Ron Temperton and my own Speedster and we were duly allocated a space on the edge of the completely empty field adjoining the 2-furlong pole, where we were soon joined by other club members and more Porsches than can be imagined.

Fortunately, by being first on the scene, we were able to grab enough space for a long row of club cars and were rewarded by a near-record turnout for such an event.  By mid-morning, there were eight Speedsters, three 550 Spyders and a 718 RSK in our line-up – and that was in addition to four other club members who turned up, but without their cars for different reasons.

In addition to most of the “regulars” and several others, we witnessed the first appearance of Samuel and Sophie Hughes, getting an early feel for the sort of cars that parents Trevor and Ruth like to admire.  Simon and Eleanor Hambly also had young Harry in tow, so our average age was kept to an all time low!

Elsewhere on the site were 316 A and C Coupes, plus examples of almost every Porsche from the 1950s up to the latest models.  Possibly the finest car of the day, however, was not a Porsche, but one of the rare, and quite stunning, Alfa Romeo Competiziones.  A variety of famous Ferraris, including a superb GTO and a 1960s Dino were also much admired, as were the Fiat Abarths.

Bacon rolls were, I am pleased to confirm, of a very high standard, although, alas, also of a very high price!

With hood down from 7.30am through to the drive home in the late afternoon, this was a great day and one that no Porsche fan should miss next year!

Unfortunately, that is almost it for 2011, although those local to the areas will no doubt enjoy the November events in Slough and Exeter, when the days are short and the winter almost upon us.

We have been fortunate with the weather this year (a big improvement on 2010) and have had some good turnouts at many events, with Castle Combe, Cranleigh and Windsor likely to remain in the memory.  There were also such excellent reports from Len Raynsford and Paul Smith on the Wings and Wheels show at White Waltham airfield, that we are certain to add that event to our list next year -  Len is still talking about the Spitfire that landed a short distance behind his rear bumper!
