Hampshire Pageant of Motoring
- 31st August 2009
A day which started out inauspiciously, with mist and fog all the way down to Romsey, turned into an afternoon of glorious sunshine at Broadlands, where the usual massive number of classic car clubs had their infinite variety of cars on display.
The Speedster and Spyder Club's representation was exceptional. Although there were no Spyders present, we had 14 cars on display, including vehicles from no less than 7 different manufacturers - Chesil, Intermeccanica, Beck, Legend, Covin, Tygan and PGO. This must surely have been a record! In addition, it was probably the first time ever that 3 different Convertible Ds have appeared at the same show - Chesil, Legend and Intermeccanica.
This was the second appearance of Rob Jones' beautiful ivory Intermeccanica, but the first time that we had seen the blue PGO of Mike Twomey and the red Legend built by Kevin Mansfield (well, it was started as a Legend, but like most of Terry Sands' cars, had to be finished by its owner with support from elsewhere!!)
Our new gazebo was also seen for the first time - a big improvement on its predecessor which met an untimely end in the winds at Sherborne in July!

A feature of the Pageant is the parade of cars in the central arena and 10 of our cars drove round in state, with each driver being interviewed by the MC and asked about the car, its history, special features, etc. etc. The public, as always, responded very positively to the Speedsters and applauded generously.
There were so many magnificent cars to admire that it would be unfair to pick a favourite, but the line-up of pre-war Jaguars certainly took some beating and my eye was also taken by a gleaming pink Edsel, one of a number of great examples of post-war US motors.
Great turnout and another fine Hampshire Pageant!
