Hampshire Pageant of Motoring
- Broadlands - 25th August 2008
Once again in this miserable summer, the overcast, and occasionally drizzly, weather kept some of the public away from a Bank Holiday event. There were still plenty of people around, however, to admire our splendid display of Club cars - a dozen Speedsters, plus several members without their cars for various reasons - one through accident (Guy Brooke's unfortunate Spyder), one still being SVA'd (but Rob Jones assured us that early September will finally see his Intermeccannica on the road!) and a couple of others about to be purchased).
It was third time lucky for James Dean (no, not that one, but our own Jimmy, with wife Angela!) who failed to meet us at this event two years ago through illness and last year turned up on the Sunday, while the rest of us were there as usual on the Monday!
Although the sun never quite broke through, Club members enjoyed showing off their cars, sitting in the now-famous gazebo (a feature at every event these days), buying useful and sometimes rare accessories from the many dealers' stalls and inspecting the huge numbers of classic and vintage cars to be seen - I think my favourite display this time was the American cars, which included some absolutely massive Chevvies, Studebakers and Fords, plus several superb Cadillacs, one of course in the mandatory pink!

Chief surprise among our own cars was the appearance of a sparkling clean and elegant "Hero" - yes, Martin Sergison's well-known Porsche-engined Speedster is now being lovingly looked after by new owner Peter Nobbs and I'm convinced the car was smiling all day! Also proving a point was Mike and Jane Dowland's bright red Speedster which arrived with their two young children in the back, demonstrating that the car can be a genuine 2 + 2 if needed!
With the end in sight for one of the wettest Augusts on record, we can now look forward to a big weekend at the end of September, with the visit to the Tygan factory in Beaminster on Saturday 27th, followed by the Porsche Picnic in the Park at Wellington Country Park the next day (Sunday 28th), where we are sure to get a terrific welcome. The former requires a phone call to Tygan to confirm attendance (if you haven't already given your name to Leslie Bennett), whilst the Porsche Picnic in the Park is a very relaxed "turn up on the day" affair - there's always tons of room. But contact me if in doubt.
